Total AV is one of the latest additions to the antivirus market, launching only in 2016. They have quickly proven themselves as a go-to antivirus option, offering all of the basic features you would expect, plus some interesting additions like a built-in VPN, with more features to come.

Very speedy full system scan

Some extra features have not yet launched
Total AV has clearly invested heavily in user interface design. The UI is clean and easy to navigate, making accessing the software’s main features a very quick process. It’s also color-coded: green means your system is clear, yellow means there are some things you may want to look at, and red means you are infected and should scan. In other words, you know where you stand with nothing more than a quick glance at the main screen of the application. There’s a “Fix Issues” button at the top, making it simple to fix issues across all categories, and a quick navigation menu on the left, so you can always get back to the main features wherever you are in the application.
There are both quick scan and system scan options. The quick scan performs a basic search in the places most likely to be infected by a virus, including your desktop, browser, folders, cookies, and cache, while the system scan performs a full scan of the entire eternal disk. The quick scan is not particularly quick, taking up to 15 minutes, but the system scan is surprisingly speedy considering how comprehensive it is, taking just 24 minutes to complete. Combined with Total AV’s low CPU usage, the system scan has a comparably-low impact on your computer’s processing power than comparable scans from other antivirus providers. This means that you can conveniently perform the full system scan more regularly than you would using other antivirus options. You can schedule the software to perform full scans every week, fortnight, or month, so you don’t have to do this manually each time.
If the Total AV software finds any malware or other threats, it will quarantine these in a special area accessible from within the application. From here, you can easily delete or restore the quarantined item. The software is enabled with real-time protection against emerging malware and viruses, which updates automatically around the clock.
The Total AV antivirus also offers excellent cookie tracking. Cookies are vulnerable because they can lead a potential attacker directly to your computer. Hackers can place malicious cookies in your browser’s cookie area, which then connects you without your knowledge to the hacker’s website as soon as you open your browser. The cookie tells the hacker that your computer has been infected, and with that knowledge it becomes frighteningly easy for the hacker to take over your machine. Even if you become aware of the attack and remove the virus, the cookie remains on your computer and will keep supplying information to your attacker if you load that site again. Total AV scans for and eliminates these malicious cookies.
A small downside is that Total AV is one of the newest antivirus providers on the market, so none of the independent antivirus testing laboratories have yet tested it, making it difficult to compare its abilities to its competitors. That being said, third-party reviews consistently demonstrate its robust detection of test viruses and malware.
- In-built VPN
- System Boost
- Disk cleaner
- Duplicates cleaning tool
The in-built VPN is a unique selling point – to our knowledge, Total AV is the only antivirus provider currently offering this option. The VPN is secured with the highest-level AES-256-bit encryption, and has a decent number of server locations at 40. However, Total AV doesn’t provide many other details on its VPN, so if you are looking for a fully-featured VPN option it pays to invest in that separately, but if you are looking for good, baseline VPN protection, you will save a lot of money by paying once for both your antivirus software and your VPN.
The System Boost feature allows you to disable particular programs that launch at startup. Like many antivirus providers, Total AV has a disk cleaner, but consistent with the rest of their offering, it is particularly user-friendly and well-designed. The file manager locates and removes any junk or duplicate files that are slowing down your system.
Because Total AV is so new, it does not yet offer separate firewall protection, backups, a browser performance optimizer, or parental controls. However, all of these features are listed as “coming soon” on their website, so Total AV will soon be even better value for money with these additions.
There’s a 30 day trial Total AV download, so you can test it out to make sure you’re happy before you commit.
